As a composer, he has written multiple works for orchestras, choirs, bands, and ensembles of all types. His song-cycles Songs of the Spirit and Youth and Age, cantata Canticle of the Nativity, and Jazz Mass have been frequently performed and commercially recorded, as have his jazz suites Suite Essence and The Tradition. His music has been performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, OPUS 20, Western Sinfonia, Phoenix Ensemble, Young Sinfonia, and frequently by the London Jazz Orchestra and Eclectic Voices. He was music director/arranger for Billy Cobham’s Extended Works jazz orchestra project and has collaborated with many jazz, African, folk and Indian musicians, including Youssou N’Dour, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Wheeler, and June Tabor in projects with orchestra. He has also produced many commissioned works for youth and amateur forces.
